Do I need FSSAI registration for a small home-based food business?

Yes. All food businesses in India require at least an FSSAI Basic Registration. This includes home caterers, tiffin services, small bakeries, and cloud kitchens operating from home.

What is the difference between FSSAI Registration and FSSAI Licence?

FSSAI Basic Registration is for small businesses with turnover up to Rs 12 lakhs. An FSSAI State Licence is for businesses with turnover between Rs 12 lakhs and Rs 20 crores. The documentation and process are different for each.

How long is the FSSAI licence valid?

FSSAI registration and licences are valid for 1 to 5 years, depending on the period you choose at the time of application. Renewal must be done 30 days before expiry.

What are the penalties for operating without FSSAI?

Operating a food business without FSSAI registration can attract a penalty of up to Rs 5 lakhs. It can also lead to closure of the business by the food safety officer.
